Don't miss our future Interior Secrets

The room you'll never want to leave

There is almost always one room in a home that people pass through without ever truly living in it.

A guest bedroom that has become little more than a storage space. A home office no one ever uses. A living room that feels too large to be truly inviting.

Then, one day, that room finally finds its purpose.

Not because another piece of furniture has been added.

But because it finally has a story to tell.

Why a bespoke bookcase transforms more than just a room

There is a common misconception in interior architecture: that every room naturally has an obvious purpose.

The living room is for entertaining.

The kitchen is for cooking.

The office is for working.

Yet whenever I visit a home for the first time, I almost always notice a space that seems to be waiting for something. A room that is rarely used. A forgotten corner. A beautiful volume with all the right proportions, but no real reason to exist. Interestingly, what is missing is rarely square footage.

What is missing is intention.

Over the years, I have come to realise that a successful interior is not simply a collection of beautiful rooms.

It is a home where every space has a meaningful role in the lives of the people who live there.

Some families dream of a welcoming kitchen where everyone naturally gathers.

Others need a truly functional home office.

Others simply long for a quiet place to slow down.

Sometimes, a bespoke bookcase fulfils far more than a storage requirement.

It becomes a sanctuary. A place to read. To listen to music. To enjoy a few peaceful moments while the rest of the house quietly carries on around you.

Of course, it holds books.

But it also displays treasured objects collected during travels.

Family photographs.

A cherished collection.

A favourite work of art.

Each item tells a story that feels far more personal than décor chosen simply because it happens to be fashionable. Perhaps that is what I appreciate most about bespoke design.

It is never about filling a space.

It is about giving that space a purpose.

I always enjoy hearing from clients a few weeks after a project has been completed.

More often than not, they tell me exactly the same thing:

"We never expected it, but this has become the room we use the most."

Not because it is the most spectacular. But because it feels effortless. It has naturally become part of their everyday life.

Perhaps that is the true measure of a successful interior design project.

Creating a space that feels as though it has always belonged there. A space that simply feels right. Bespoke bookcases occupy a special place in this philosophy. Once considered little more than practical storage, they have become genuine architectural features.

They define a room.

Frame perspectives.

Celebrate ceiling height.

Sometimes they seamlessly incorporate a window seat, a discreet workspace, or carefully integrated lighting. They bring together beauty and function. Most importantly, they evolve alongside the people who live in the home.

A bookcase is never truly finished. Over the years, it fills up. It changes. It welcomes new memories.

Little by little, it tells a story that no one else could ever replicate.

At a time when so many interiors can feel remarkably similar, that uniqueness has become increasingly valuable.

Choosing a bespoke bookcase is therefore about far more than aesthetics.

It is a decision to dedicate space to what truly matters.

To the things that inspire us. The things that bring us peace. The things that quietly shape the identity of a home.

And perhaps the greatest luxury is not owning more...

But living in a home that quietly tells the story of who we are.

Through these monthly Interior Perspectives, I'll be sharing an interior architect's perspective on the way we inhabit our homes, the decisions that create lasting transformation, and the often invisible details that make all the difference.

Because a thoughtfully designed home does more than look beautiful.

It supports, reveals and evolves alongside the people who live in it.
